You’ve been playing in Toronto punk bands since I first started playing with Pogs…
What are some of your best memories from the 90’s punk scene in Toronto?
I was lucky enough to get into the Toronto punk scene at such a great time. There was amazing bands like Blundermen, Hockey Teeth, One Blood, Wad, The Satanatras, Problem Children, Mudfish, and so many more. There was an awesome place called Project X. Every Sunday afternoon there would be great all-ages shows for the kids. The scene was a lot of fun. It was also a lot tougher. There was violence, but there was comfort in knowing that people had your back. You really did pay your dues back then…. Read the rest of this entry »

Cactus Vella: Punk in its Truest Form:
“There are those who think “punk” is a certain type of music; heavy drum beats, loud guitars, anti-establishment lyrics sung by a drug-and-alcohol-laden lead singer. Any true follower of punk and all that it means will tell you that is bullshit. They know that there is so much more to it than that and refuse to be limited by such a narrow view, and really, isn’t that punk in its truest form?…” Read the rest of this entry »

“Jon Creeden shared a link to Cactus Vella’s bandcamp and it had that folk punk edge that is just oh so good right now. I quickly got in touch with this Toronto resident.
What are your thoughts on the music scene in your local residence?
The local scene here in Toronto is alive and well. Toronto has always had an amazing scene from the very beginning. On any given night there’s plenty of bands to be seen. There’s always awesome bands playing at The Bovine Sex Club, The Hard Luck Bar, The Press Club, Sneaky Dee’s and countless other venues. Those are just my favorites.
The only thing lacking today in Toronto is venues providing the opportunity to host all-ages events.
How would describe your music style?
I play acoustic punk. Rebel Music.”

“Cactus Vella yet another Torontonian musician that is featured on Everything and the Kitchen Sink.
So who the hell is Cactus Vella? Well I am trying to get to that.. So be paitent…
Cactus Vella has been around in the Toronto punk scene since the early 90’s and continues to play in some of my favourite punk bands. Not only does he play in Sinkin’ Ships, The Class Assassins and The Whiskey Hearts Collective, but he pushed the boundaries of music with his own Album….”

“The greatest thing about this is that I get to talk about not only Cactus Vella’s solo project but he is the guitarist in some of my favorite Toronto punk bands. Cactus Vella has been around in the Toronto Punk scene since the early 90’s,and continues to play in Sinkin’ Ships, Class Assassins and The Whiskey Hearts Collective.
One of my favorite things about any musician is when they push the boundaries of their own music. Cactus Vella plays in some amazing hardcore punk rock bands, but who is to say that you can’t go and record a gritty acoustic punk rock album? And he did just that. So here’s a couple of clips of his acoustic stylings….”
